Swiss peatlands as carbon and water stores: evaluation and measures to make use of peatland functions in a +3°C Switzerland

· Bundesklar Redaktion

The Federal Council is tasked with examining and reporting on the overall carbon and water storage capacity of Swiss peatlands, on how much CO2 is currently emitted by Swiss peatlands and, respectively, how much H2O flows off as a result of the impaired condition of the peatlands, as well as on possible development scenarios. Based on this evaluation, measures are to be examined in order to preserve and, where possible, strengthen the CO2 sink function and water storage capacity of Swiss peatlands. Further CO2 emissions and losses of water storage capacity of the peatlands are to be prevented or, respectively, reduced. The measures examined are to be compared with other measures for CO2 reduction and water storage and assessed in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, feasibility and costs.
