The purpose, tasks and composition of the extra-parliamentary commissions are reviewed every four years when they are fully renewed. Following an initial review phase, the Federal Council took note of the report on the results of the consultation procedure and adopted the dispatch on the reorganisation of the extra-parliamentary commissions as part of the 2025 review. The proposal is expected to result in savings of almost CHF 100,000 per year.
The proposal provides for the following:
the dissolution of three extra-parliamentary commissions: Commission for the Promotion of Swiss Education Abroad, Federal Consumer Affairs Commission, Federal Housing Commission;
the reduction in the number of members of the Medical Professions Commission;
the merger of seven commissions into two; Examination Commission for Chiropractic, Examination Commission for Veterinary Medicine, Examination Commission for Dental Medicine, Examination Commission for Human Medicine and Examination Commission for Pharmacy, which will become the Examination Commission for University Medical Professions; Federal Labour Commission and the Confederation's Tripartite Commission within the framework of the accompanying measures for the free movement of persons, which will become the Federal Tripartite Labour Commission;
