Climate maps are a key planning basis for heat-adapted and future-proof settlement development. The high-resolution temperature measurement networks in settlement areas answer questions such as: Where does it get particularly hot? Which green and open spaces are needed to cool the air? Where are there cooling wind corridors (cold-air pathways)? Where are a hospital, kindergarten or care home for older people located, and how hot is it there? These bases serve a wide range of areas, from health protection to urban planning. They make it possible to prioritise measures where risks and suffering are greatest, thereby deploying resources in a targeted and efficient manner. In summer 2025, only 15 different canton-level climate maps produced independently were available. For the development and further development of climate maps for other cantons, cities and functional areas, a certain degree of harmonisation and minimum requirements are very important. The cantons should be able to set priorities: climate maps should be produced first for cities and functional areas particularly affected by heat. Cantons and municipalities should coordinate their work.
