Business 26.4161: effects of the hot summer of 2026 on health?
The Federal Council is therefore requested to answer the following questions regarding the effects of the hot summer of 2026 on health, mortality and the healthcare system. How high was heat-related mortality in Switzerland from May to August 2026 compared with the existing analyses from 2003, 2015, 2018, 2019 and since 2023? Which population groups (age, gender, people with pre-existing conditions, housing situation, etc.) were particularly affected? To what extent did emergency reports and deployments, hospital stays and doctor’s visits increase as a result of the heat? Which heat-related disease diagnoses increased? What effects did the heat have on the working conditions of care staff in hospitals as well as nursing and retirement homes? What additional health and care costs are to be expected overall as a result of the heat? Are there differences in heat-related deaths and illnesses between cantons with and those without a heat action plan?
