At its meeting of 2 September 2026, the Federal Council elected the current vice-chair Christoph Ammann as the new chair of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), effective 1 May 2027. He will succeed Barbara Janom Steiner, who will step down at the end of April 2027. St Gallen member of the cantonal government and finance director Marc Mächler will become a new member of the Bank Council and was also appointed vice-chair.
At its meeting of 2 September 2026, the Federal Council took note of Barbara Janom Steiner’s resignation as chair of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB). She has been a member of the Bank Council since 2015 and will reach the maximum term of office at the end of April 2027.
Christoph Ammann, who has been a member of the Bank Council since 2019 and its vice-chair since 2025, will become the new chair.
Marc Mächler will become a new member of the Bank Council and will also succeed Christoph Ammann as vice-chair.
All decisions take effect on 1 May 2027 for the remainder of the current term of office (2024 to 2028).
