Switzerland’s birth rate is at the lowest level measured to date. Persistently low birth rates curb growth in the domestic working-age population and accelerate population ageing. They therefore also pose challenges for public finances. The FFA’s new working paper places the causes and consequences of persistently low birth rates in context and identifies possible starting points for forward-looking economic and fiscal policy.
