Double surnames will be possible again from 1 January 2027
Spouses will once again be able to use a double surname from the new year. At its meeting on 21 October 2026, the Federal Council decided that the corresponding amendment to the Swiss Civil Code (CC) would enter into force on 1 January 2027. During a transitional period, however, identity documents may continue to be issued with an alliance name that differs from the official surname.
