In Policy Brief No. 10, Sonja Merten, a member of the Federal Commission for Family Affairs (FCFA), and her colleague Irene Falgas Bague shed light on the issues surrounding the postpartum period. They identify the most common risk factors and describe the symptoms of postpartum depression and how it differs from the baby blues. They also provide an overview of the situation in Switzerland and make recommendations to the authorities: nationwide data collection, systematic early detection, as well as strengthening coordinated care and creating low-threshold services. The two authors advocate the introduction of adequate parental leave with more equal rights for both parents, as well as income compensation amounting to 100 percent of income for the entire duration of the work ban.
