Survivors’ and disability pensions under the compulsory second pillar (BVG) must be adjusted periodically to increases in the consumer price index until ordinary retirement age is reached. The first adjustment of these BVG pensions takes place after three years; subsequent adjustments are linked to inflation adjustments for old-age and survivors’ insurance (AHV) pensions and generally take place every two years.

Pensions adjusted for the first time

Pensions paid since 2023 will be adjusted for the first time; they will be increased by 2.1 per cent. This rate is calculated on the basis of price trends between September 2023 (99.4159) and September 2026 (101.4737), according to the consumer price index (base December 2025 = 100).

Adjustment following the increase in AHV pensions

As AHV pensions will be adjusted in 2027, survivors’ and disability pensions under compulsory occupational pension provision must also be increased:

Pensions first adjusted on 1 January 2026: increase of 1.0 per cent. Pensions last adjusted on 1 January 2025: increase of 1.2 per cent.

The adjustment rate is calculated by comparing the index level for September 2026 (101.4737) with the index level for September 2025 (100.4789) or September 2024 (100.2539), respectively (base December 2025 = 100).

Pensions exceeding compulsory BVG provision

For pensions exceeding the BVG minimum, inflation adjustments are not compulsory. Like pensions for which the BVG does not prescribe periodic inflation adjustments, they are adjusted by pension institutions in line with their financial resources. The pension institution’s supreme governing body decides annually whether and to what extent pensions will be adjusted (Art. 36 para. 2 BVG). The pension institution explains its decisions in its annual accounts or annual report.
