The revised Ordinance will enter into force on 1 November 2026. From 2 November 2026, Swiss citizens may, if they wish, apply for the new identity card. At the same time, an amendment to the Ordinance of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) on Identity Documents for Swiss Nationals will enter into force on 1 November 2026; it was approved by the Head of the FDJP.

Revision of the Identity Documents Ordinance: Adoption by the Federal Council
On 26 August 2026, the Federal Council adopted an amendment to the Ordinance on Identity Documents for Swiss Nationals, providing the necessary basis for the introduction of the biometric identity card.
